Pohnpei
offers what may be the most diverse scenery
of the islands of Micronesia. This small island
is located in the Pacific Ocean, some 1,600
km (1,000 miles) southeast of Guam. Geographically
it belongs to the East Carolines, but politically
it is one of the states of the Federated States
of Micronesia.
Pohnpei’s
territory includes eight atolls, 25 smaller
islands with a barrier reef and 137 scattered
coral atolls or outer islands. Its main island
is the third largest in Micronesia islands.
It
is a place of ancient culture where tradition
is kept alive. People live in harmony with nature
and have never lost touch with their land. Fortunately,
its landscape has changed very little since
the early days, maintaining its natural beauty.
Hiking
is specially rewarding in the island. Its rainforest
is home to more than 40 species of birds, reptiles
and deer. There are rivers and fresh water pools
and some of the most spectacular waterfalls
in the area. A hike to one of the 42 of falls
can take from 5 minutes to 4 hours. Of special
interest is Nan Madol, an ancient stone city
built on 100 artificial islets off the south
coast of the island. There is also the Peak
of Mr Sokenhs, from where you can enjoy a wonderful
360° view of the island.
If
you are looking for the comforts of a big city
perhaps Pohnpei is not for you. But if you enjoy
interacting with people and experience nature
first hand, Pohnpei is a dream come true.
